Why Pockets Matter More Than You Think at a Festival
Share
Design a festival coat around secure, useful storage instead of relying on fragile costume pockets.
Quick answer: At a large event, pockets are part of the safety system. They keep small essentials attached to your body and reduce the temptation to set items down in the dark.
Prioritize security
Zipped or deep pockets are better for movement than shallow decorative openings. Test access while wearing gloves and a hydration pack.
Assign a purpose to each pocket
Keep frequently used items in consistent locations: lip balm, gloves, ear protection or a small light. Avoid storing irreplaceable items where they can fall out.
Do not overload the garment
Heavy objects distort a coat and become uncomfortable while dancing. Use a secure pack for water and larger supplies.
Create a pocket map
Give each secure pocket one purpose and use it consistently: backup light, gloves, lip balm or ear protection. Avoid putting a phone, identification and every essential in one place. A simple map reduces searching in darkness and makes it easier to notice when something is missing.
Test weight as well as capacity
Fill the pockets with the real objects, close the garment and move vigorously. If the coat pulls to one side, hits the body or changes how it closes, move heavier items to a secure bag. Storage is helpful only when it does not distort the garment or create a new snagging hazard.
