Layer before you feel cold
Start with a dry base layer, add insulation and finish with a warm outer layer. Packing the coat on your bike or in camp is useful only if you can reach it before the temperature drops.
Be visible from every direction
Use steady personal lighting on your front and back. Decorative LEDs are helpful, but they do not replace reliable safety lighting or a properly illuminated bicycle.
Protect the small things
Warm socks, gloves and head coverage can make a larger difference than another decorative layer. Closed-toe footwear also protects against rough ground and nighttime obstacles.
Test visibility in real darkness
A garment that appears bright indoors can disappear on an open, unlit playa. Test your body lights outside, walk around the person from every direction and check whether bags or outer layers block them. Weak glow items are not dependable safety lighting, and decorative animation should never replace clear bicycle headlights and tail lights.
Create a cold-response routine
